Second Cornet

John Surgener is a founding member of the Lexington Brass Band and has served as ripiano, second, and third cornet. After careers as a band director, an industrial salesman, and seven years in sales at Don Wilson Music Co., John is now a man of leisure. John is a graduate of Wake Forest University where he studied trumpet with Emerson W. Head and Calvin R. Huber. A partial list of musical organizations in which he has played include: the Advocate Brass Band, Saxton’s Cornet Band (appearing in the motion pictures “Gettysburg” and “The Day Lincoln Was Shot”), Sacred Winds, and the Roanoke (VA) Symphony. He presently resides in Lexington, Kentucky.

Originally from Michigan, Jeffrey A. Spenner received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois where he majored in trumpet performance and studied conducting. He is the Founder and Music Director of the Bay Area Summer Music Festival in Michigan, Artistic and Education Coordinator for the Lexington Philharmonic, Orchestra Director at Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington, a member of the Lexington Brass Band, an instructor at the Music Institute of Lexington, and an active conductor, trumpeter, clinician and advocate for music education. Spenner’s mentors include Donald Schleicher, Timothy W. Foley, Eduardo Diazmuñoz, James F. Keene, and the late Michael Ewald.
