E Flat Alto Horn

Nathan Miller is beginning his second tour of duty with the Lexington Brass Band, playing previously with the LBB in 2001-2002.  He is currently the Director of Music for The Salvation Army in Lexington, KY where he directs both adult and youth brass ensembles, as well as children’s choral and beginning music programs.  Nathan has received Horn Performance degrees from Asbury University (B.A. 2005) and the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (M.M. 2007).  After spending two summers in Italy playing horn for the Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca, Nathan now enjoys olive oil and speaking faux-Italian.  He was previously a member of the St. Louis Brass Band from 1999-2001.  The Salvation Army music programs provided Nathan with his early music education.  More importantly, his involvement in The Salvation Army gave him the opportunity to experience God’s love and share it with others in practical ways.  Nathan has a hamster named Oreo, a nephew named Andy, a niece named Ellen and enjoys woodworking, books, and freestyle rapping yo.

Susan Henthorn, a native of Eastern Ohio, earned her Bachelor’s in Music Education degree from Otterbein College and a Masters in Library Science from Kent State University. She is a former member of the Village Brass Quintet (then the Hallelujah Brass Quintet), the Westerville Symphony, and Danville’s Advocate Brass Band where she also served as the group’s librarian.  Susan is currently the Berea Digital Project Coordinator at Hutchins Library, Berea College. She is a member of Mortarboard, Delta Omicron, and Beta Phi Mu.  Susan recently served as the secretary for the North American Brass Band Association board. Susan and her husband, Steve Ford, live in Berea.

Mike West attended Michigan State University, spent two years as a musician at Ft. Hood Army base and graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Music degree. For 20+ years he taught music in Michigan schools and was a musical consultant and arranger for marching bands and drum corps throughout Michigan and Canada. He was a member of the Great Lakes Judges Association.

In 1983 he moved back to his home state of Kentucky. He was one of the original founders of the Capital City Community Band. He has been a member of Saxton’s Cornet Band for 15 years and is currently a member of the board of directors. He has played alto horn in the Lexington Brass Band since its beginning and is a member of its board of directors. He is currently working with the Frankfort Salvation Army Youth Band. He has spent countless hours arranging and transposing music of the mid and late 1800s.

Mike is married, has three children and two grandsons and lives in Frankfort, Kentucky, where he works for Franklin County Public Schools in Community Education.

Sherry Holbrook Baker holds degrees from the University of Kentucky (B. Music), Michigan State University (M. Music) and the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (D.M.A.).  In addition to currently serving as a substitute for both the Lexington Philharmonic and the Owensboro Symphony, she has also been a member of Arkansas Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, Midland (MI) Symphony, Battle Creek Symphony, and several brass and also woodwind quintets.  A Lexington native, Sherry serves as adjunct instructor of horn at Centre College.  She and her husband, Dr. Michael Baker (Assistant Professor of Music Theory at U.K.), have two children, Jack (4) and Lucy (17 months).  Sherry also enjoys quilting, knitting and reading – especially mysteries.
