Nicky Hughes narrates most Lexington Brass Band concerts. A 1972 graduate of Western Kentucky University, he retired following a 27-year career with Kentucky state government. Working in Frankfort mainly for the Kentucky Historical Society, he served as curator of the Kentucky Military History Museum, museums division manager, and curator of the Old State Capitol. He is now curator of historic sites for the City of Frankfort and is responsible for the new Capital City Museum and the Fort Hill Civil War Park. Hughes is co-author of “Historic Images of Frankfort,” a two-volume pictorial history of Kentucky’s capital city. Long active in living history, he was editor of “Camp Chase Gazette,” the national magazine for Civil War re-enactors. Hughes is narrator and drum major for Saxton’s Cornet Band, the Kentucky-based ensemble that re-creates brass bands of the Civil War era. A high school student of piano and tuba, Hughes insists that the only thing that stood between him and a career in music was “a complete and total lack of musical talent.”
